But, but, but…

While it’s not technically wrong, it’s best to avoid using ‘but’ or other conjunctions at the beginning of a sentence. While starting a sentence with ‘but’ has it’s place, it can make the writing sound informal and or choppy. So, here are a few other words and phrases which can serve as good, drop-in replacements for ‘but’ and ‘and’:

Instead of ‘but’, you could use:

  • However,
  • That being said,
  • Nevertheless,

Instead of ‘and’, you could use:

  • In addition,
  • Moreover,
  • Furthermore,
